Plane Crash?

A couple weeks ago I was running my typical route with Rain along the Spanish Banks (a well known beach in Vancouver, BC) when I saw the nose of an airplane in the distance. I was worried and thought an airplane had crashed. However, when I got closer I saw that it was a movie set for the upcoming movie Passengers.

Consumption

What do the things we consume say about who we are? Do we consume to live or live to consume? Economist, Donald Hay writes, “The basic hypothesis about household consumption and saving behaviour is that households prefer to smooth out their consumption over time.” Thus, we will save in times of excess and borrow against future earnings in times of financial difficulty.I have been working on a paper looking at Household consumption and am amazed to see the number of advertisements we are exposed to everyday. Author Rodney Clapp notes that, “The average American is exposed to 16,000 commercial messages, symbols and reminders every single day.”[1] David Loy correctly demonstrates our cultures emphasis on advertising as he reports that, “in 1994 the U.S. spent $147 billion for advertising – far more that on all higher education.” Some of the books I have been using include Juliet B. Schor, The Overspent American and David Lipsey's Economics textbook.

Communion

             communion
We were gathered round the table
Oh the stories that were shared
A light was there around us
The glow of those who cared
And all the years of then and now
And maybe some day soon
Filled our hearts with laughter
And brightened up the room

from my dad

Wisdom of Forgiveness

by Vusi Mahlasela

Here lies the wisdom
The wisdom of forgiveness
With bright colours of life
A gift to all humanity

Here lies the power
The power of love
With the soulful understanding
of necessity for a change

Why all these compromises
When we know what to do
Lets take the spear
And put it right inside this evil monster
Learn to be free
And learn to be in harmony
With the rest of the world
Learn to be free

So we can learn to forgive
Because an eye for an eye
Will only lead our world to blindness.

SuperBUMMER XLI

It was a sad day as a Bears fan today. At least Da Bears made it to the superbowl. Rex is young and maybe will play better in the Superbowl next year. Here are some pictures of our XLI party.

Me (Bears jersey) and Andrew (Colt's jersey). Yes we were mostly civil with each other.

Quilts

Here is my mother with students at a local middle school who crocheted quilts for Birthright. Birthright is a non-profit organization that assists women through an unplanned pregnancy. My mother has been volunteering with Birthright ever since I can remember.
